Doctor of Education – Ph.D. in Education

A Doctor of Education (EDD) is an educational degree intended for professionals pursuing educational leadership positions. The PhD in education is also a professional level post- graduate degree meant for education-oriented practitioners pursuing advanced research and teaching careers. Both the doctorate and PhD levels are completed at times from separate schools and universities or from one institution with a joint agreement. The doctorate is a much- wanted professional level education for education researchers and teachers since it helps them deal with complex issues and come up with meaningful and clear recommendations.

Both doctorates are awarded by separate and affiliated schools and universities. Doctorate in education (different than doctorate in education) requires you to have served as a teacher or education researcher and to have conducted original research in the area of education. Besides the doctorate, a PhD in education also needs to be awarded by an independent educational institution. There’s no universal criteria for eligibility, although generally, the recipient has to have worked at least as an educator in an academic setting for at least five years. It may also require completion of more than one post-secondary education program.

A doctoral degree is awarded for three to five years. Usually, it takes two to three years to complete. In some cases, it might take a longer time, but a doctorate in education does not always demand higher quality trainees. Generally speaking, doctoral candidates are hired on the basis of their dissertation records and their performances on the clinical and scholarly parts of the degree program.

The doctorate in education is very different from the normal doctorate coursework, even though both are awarded for the same purpose. A doctoral student must complete original research in addition to all coursework requirements. Normally, this dissertation is done on the student’s own in a year-round program at an institution of higher learning, although it can be done outside the classroom as well. In some cases, this coursework is not included in the program, especially if the student has already completed his or her dissertation. In such cases, he or she may opt to take additional courses at a community college or trade school instead.

Doctorate level dissertation is meant to give a detailed, scholarly explanation of previous research. In order to qualify, a candidate must have original, substantial research, which is supported by appropriate sources. The program allows learners to acquire new knowledge and enhance their teaching skills in areas not covered within their doctorate degree. For those who already have a bachelors degree in education or other fields, this dissertation gives them a chance to develop skills that will help them do better job teaching others.

Teaching is an integral part of any educational system, but this can become difficult for some instructors. It becomes even more difficult when teaching is done in a complex system like that of education. Doctorate level dissertation requires specialized skills in the area of educational administration, especially when the subject deals with the workings of a university. In many cases, it also requires original, independent research. For this reason, those who wish to teach at a university should seriously consider becoming a doctorate fellow.

Doctor of Education Programs are available throughout the country, but some areas have more than others. A candidate for a doctorate degree needs to be prepared for both online doctoral programs and traditional on-campus doctorate programs. Since the program does not place a great emphasis on traditional teaching, there is the possibility of taking more coursework online than at traditional schools. In addition, some universities may require extra coursework upon enrollment, including prerequisite courses in areas such as philosophy.

Whichever type of doctorate program a student goes into, his or her professional goals will be much  closer to fruition when they have completed their education than those who did not. The PhD offers long-term benefits. Not only will you be trained in your chosen area of study, but your knowledge will be in excellent condition for years to come. A doctorate degree can help you achieve not only your educational goals, but your goals as a human being, too.
